April Chat
St. Matt’s Chat April, 2009
A Springtime prayer:
“Dear Jesus, thank you for spring. Thank you for all the changes that are taking place-buds are growing on trees, new flowers are blossoming and there are different colors all around. When everything is changing all around us, may we remember that you are always the same, Lord Jesus. You are always kind and true.” Amen. Mike Brooks from A Year of Prayers
DID YOU KNOW THAT:
- The Tuesday night line dancing was begun in the 1980’s by David & Betsy Trimble with all proceeds going to the Outreach programs of St. Matthew’s.
- Many of our St. Matthew’s members participated in the March 28th Ukrops 10K including John Rickman who has run this race for the last 10 years, 4 entire families, and 3 children ran the First Market Kids’ Mile.
- The “Flowering of the Cross” on Easter morning has been a tradition at St. Matthew’s for over 40 years.
- Buildings & Grounds Committee has a wonderful and faithful sub-committee that maintains our rose, memorial and courtyard gardens as well as our plants and azaleas. You will soon see Pat Moore, Dave Kelley and others out working to keep these areas beautiful and well maintained. Please offer your thanks to them as well as some much needed help.
- The Easter Egg roll on the White House grounds was begun in 1878 when President Hayes offered his “backyard” for children to enjoy this activity.
- Our Altar Guild was organized on November 28, 1948 with 3 women serving each month and one of them acting as the chairman. A suggestion was made in 1950 that each family donate flowers for the altar to help with costs.
- The United Thank Offering is to promote the extension of God’s kingdom throughout the world. In 1949 the Fall and Spring offering collected $35.32. In 2008, our collection was over $1500.

Altar Guild
Our Altar Guild is an integral part of our Sunday morning worship. There are approximately 45 ladies who prepare the altar for all services as well as those including baptisms, weddings and funerals. There are 4 teams of about 8 or 9 members who serve on a weekly basis. There is always a need for new members. Please consider joining. The reasons for doing so are good: you will have a greater understanding of church seasons and liturgical colors, you will help to enhance our worship, you will meet members of the church that you may not meet otherwise, you no longer have to do the linens, it only requires about an hour of your time on a monthly basis and most of all you will have an opportunity to serve the Lord. Contact Mary Meade Lee at 741-1823 for more information.
FROM YOUR PARISH LIFE COMMITTEE:
Are you a single person interested in going to a movie, play, ball game or perhaps bowling but don’t want to go by yourself? Would you like to join with other single adults for a bible study or some other form of Christian fellowship? This is NOT “Match.com” but a new opportunity to bring singles together in Christ in order to do things as a group. Please give your name, your interests and phone number to someone on the Parish Life committee and if there is enough interest, this idea will become a reality.
Congratulations to Brendan Lane Daniel and Peyton William West who will be baptized on Easter Eve and to Chris Wilkins and Heidi Baird who will be married on April 25th.
