2 TIMOTHY 1:8-12 YOUR LIFE: A DIVINE DRAMA

8 So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.

The Sovereign Author of the eternal story can be trusted, both with the how he has written us into the script and with the storyline itself. Even in human literature, good story-writing is judged by the fact that when a gun is mentioned as lying on the foyer table in an early chapter, you can be sure that it will be used by the end of the book (Chekhov’s gun). Much of what happens to us in this life may be classified as mystery (that of which the meaning can only be obtained through revelation). But, we can know that since the nature of the Author is good and perfect, so too will be the outcome of this life no matter our circumstances. The key to “seeing” the revelation is to play the role we have been given, that which St. Paul calls a holy life.

If we are part of the great and wonderful story of God, his Gospel, then whether we are cast as a stagehand or a diva we are playing a divine and important role in the drama. The late John Claypool preached a memorable sermon in which he asked the listeners the question of what audience before which they play their life. His conclusion was that as Christians we live our lives before an audience of one; the Sovereign God and Creator of all. When we live our lives we are to be aware that the whole world is watching, but our complete focus is to be on the Great Playwright and Director.

The greatest demonstration of our faith in God is the daily act of entrusting our self and our future to him…for ever.

Gracious Lord, you have scripted my life according to your loving plan. As I come to you, uncover for me that which is still mystery in my life. Inspire me to choose your way and obtain total fulfillment through living my life as you desire. Lord, I yield my will and entrust my life to you. Amen.
