JAMES 1:9-11 TRUSTING GOD
9 The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. 10 But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business.
Whether one is rich or poor, he should be content with his circumstances. Here the example of wealth is merely an illustration of the truth that we are to be content with where we find ourselves, as long as we are focused on God. But in addition, the identification of poverty with a “high position” and wealth with a “low position” serves to demonstrate that the world’s wisdom and God’s wisdom are often polar opposites. We are to see and interpret our situation in the light of God’s wisdom.
Where is the wisdom in this? If we are to be steadfast in our devotion to God, then our circumstances must be secondary at best. Focusing on our circumstances is another way in which we center on ourselves. In addition, they are subject to change, and therefore are an inconsistent referent for guidance.
During a night journey through the desert, the wise man takes the time necessary to identify the star Polaris and throughout the night determines his direction based on that star. Only the foolish traveler would choose the first star he sees in the evening and expect to successfully arrive at his destination.
Almighty and loving Father, may I find all my contentment in you. Regardless of my circumstances may I never be distracted from being grateful for knowing you as my Father and joy-filled by the revelation of your loving providence. Amen.
